SA Tyla to feature Nigerian Tems and  others in new music album “Tyla”

The synergy between African creatives over the years seems to be gaining more momentum with fresh acts and even those who have been in the game long enough, collaborating to not only entertain their fans but perhaps also establish formidable relationships among themselves.
This has once again been exemplified in the recent unveiling of the track list for Tyla’s soon-to-be-released debut music album “Tyla,” in which Nigerian singer Tems will be making a guest appearance. However, this comes a little unexpected, as both singers were not known to be close before the release of the tracklist.
While Tems has had a multiplicity of both local and international collaborations, this would be the first time her prowess would be delivered in a joint effort with the South African gem. But it is also quite surprising that Nigerian songstress Ayra Star, who is often compared with Tyla, is missing out on the new album features despite working previously with the South African singer on one of her hit singles, “Girl Next Door.” Could this be a result of the comparisons? One might wonder, especially as both Ayra Star and Tyla were born in the same year, 2002, with an eight-month difference.

Who is Tyla, 22-year-old Grammy award-winning South African singer

Recall that Tyla, via a series of social media posts and reposts, had earlier announced her forthcoming album release, which she says is scheduled for March 22, 2023. According to her, the album, which is named after her and will be her first ever music album since the launch of her music career professionally, is a blend of several genres, such as Amapiano, western pop, hip-hop, and R&B. She also disclosed that she has been working on the soon-to-be-released album for over two years and that it promises to be a unique fusion of musical styles while describing the album’s sound as experimental with her earlier single “Water” as the lead single for the album.
The South African Grammy-award-winning singer had proven her worth in the global music scene after “Water” garnered global recognition so much that it earned her a Grammy award for Best African Music Performance at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, which were held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, on February 4th, 2024.
Tyla, who was nominated in the same category as Nigerian Afrobeat maestros Davido, Olamide, Asake, and Ayra Star, amongst others, outshone all other nominees in the category to emerge as the winner – a scenario that propelled an uproar, re-emphasizing a pre-existing online feud between Nigeria and South Africa amongst other African countries. A recent collaboration between SA Nasty C and Nigeria’s Mayorkun and Rotimi after collaborating on a recent single titled “Sade” had reportedly ushered in a level playground for artists from both countries, especially after a tense rivalry that was noticed during the last African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Meanwhile, Tyla, attaining significant feat at the age of 22, had undoubtedly registered her name in the global music scene, even though she had yet to give the world a better understanding of her musical prowess.

As many anticipate the forthcoming release, other notable features in her debut album “Tyla” include South African amapiano singer and producer Kelvin Momo, American rapper, singer, and songwriter Gunna, and Jamaican dancehall DJ and rapper Skilibeng.
Others include Becky G, a famous American singer and prominent American rapper and singer Travis Scott. With this combination, the world awaits a resounding output from Tyla, hoping that she does not perform below average expectations, contrary to the impression she has already given her fans and other music lovers across the globe.
She has to her credit, eight singles as a lead artist, some of which have earned her nominations and awards as well as gold and platinum certifications. She has also had several guest appearances while being featured by other notable local and international artists.
